Meet Our Trainers...

Janie Simmons – Janie is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA), a Certified K-9 Nosework Instructor (CNWI), a CGC Evaluator, and a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers. Janie has been training dogs and their handler in agility, nose work, obedience and tracking for more than 15 years.

Janie has been an animal lover since birth, and often can train a dog to do what she wants in a matter of minutes…training the handler takes longer. To date, she has had numerous experiences in training dogs in obedience, agility, tracking, and nosework. Frequently her training methods have resulted in dogs reaching the pinnacle of their sport.

Personally, Janie has had two labs, Zack and Daisy, who have earned MACH titles and also compete in the AKC National Agility Championship. With Zack, Janie helped the Virginia team place first nationally at the AKC National Agility Championship. Daisy was recognized in 2012 as of one of the Top 25 AKC Labs in agility. In addition to agility, Janie has earned TD titles in tracking, CD title in obedience, CGC titles and Rally titles. Janie has worked with all of her dogs to earn Nosework titles, including the coveted NW3 Elite. She loves working with her dogs and learns so much from them.

Jim Simmons – Jim is the lead tracking instructor and a Certified Nose Work Instructor for Paws Plus Training. Jim earned his first TD title with Zack after a short period of “handler boot camp” to train after Janie was sidelined due to a knee injury. Since his quick start in tracking, Jim has earned four TD titles, and three TDX titles. In addition to tracking, Jim actively trains his canine companions in Nosework. Jim and Reese, his chocolate lab buddy, have earned their NW3 Elite title. When Jim is not busy with scenting sports, he is actively engaged in therapy work with his dog, and they regularly visit the VA Medical Center and a local middle school.

Jim enjoys watching the development of the “team” with his students. His expertise is in teaching his students about the effect of wind on their scenting sports and also line handling.

Jen Johnson is a Nose Work and tracking instructor for Paws Plus. Jen has earned her Certified Nose Work Instructor certification through the NACSW, and loves teaching classes. She is a Certifying Official for NACSW and an AKC Scent Work Judge.  Jen and her black lab, Shadow competed in the NW1 Nose Work trial in June 2011 and Shadow earned her NW1 title with Pronounced Status. In May 2013, Shadow earned her NW2 title from the NACSW with a Pronounced Status. In June 2014, Jen and Shadow earned their NW3 title, and earned a second NW3 title in January 2015 with a Pronounced, and her NW3 Elite in May 2015. Shadow is the epitome showing the benefit of Nosework for shy, scared dogs, and she loves her new world. Shadow is working toward earning her TD and Elite Championship titles. Ruby, the yellow lab, loves to work and excels in tracking and nosework. Ruby earned her NW3 Elite in 2017 and is working toward her Elite 2 title! Jen enjoys watching dogs come out of their shell while participating in Nose Work and watching the bonds develop between dogs and their handlers. She is frequently teaching Nosework and Tracking classes.
Paws Plus Training, LLC is central Virginia's only training group that has three Certified Nosework Instructors (CNWI).
